This is a 'bentside spinet', made in the last half of the 17th century. Bentside spinets are small harpsichords, and this one is incredibly beautiful with inlay and an interesting reversal on black and white keys.

It was once owned by Kendrick Pyne, and Boddington (the ale-makers) in 1888, and then bought by Josiah Chapman. James Kendrick Pyne (1852-1938) was Professor of Organ at the RMCM from its foundation in 1893 when he was recruited by Charles Hallé. He was a lecturer in Church Music and Organ at Owens College / Victoria University of Manchester (1901-1927) and Dean of the Faculty of Music of the University on 3 occasions. Pyne was also organist of Manchester Cathedral (1876-1908), Owens College and the University of Manchester (1902-1927), and Manchester Town Hall (1877-1927). He was Chairman of the City Council’s Art Gallery Committee and a director of the Manchester Ship Canal.
