A programme for the Festival of the Tenth Summer... a celebration of Manchester music since punk in 1976. (Note punk tv aggitator Bill Grundy as compere!)

Says Andy Williams of Doves;

"We saw pretty much everyone who played that day, A Certain Ratio, The Smiths, The Fall & New Order... Oh & The Virgin Prunes?' (I could never work out why they were on the bill!)

For us it was very important. Me & Jez were 16 & we'd just finished school for good that week, so we were ready to
celebrate. We'd been going to gigs but It was our first
festival & we were big New Order/Smiths/Fall fans so the
line-up for us was great. We'd been knocking about in bands before this time, but i think it was the first time we thought this is a much more preferable career option to the dole, college, delivering local papers or packing second hand Plastic Jewellery into binliners (one of Jez's jobs!).

One of my lasting memories was whilst watching The
Fall & a girl in front of me throwing up all over the
guy in front of her. I remember thinking 'I wonder if
all festivals are like this??' & 20 years later looking
back i can say 'yes they are'.
