Mike Shaft
Russell Club
1985

Jumped the gun a bit there...This the last Breakout music paper, July ’85. Interesting article about Mike Shaft’s endevours to get a national black radio station off the ground as well as one for the Manchester area.He often used to D.J. at The Russell playing funk, jazz funk, soul, reggae etc. and I used to listen to his Saturday evening show on Piccadilly; pretty much the only reggae oriented show I can recall from that time. Sometimes he’d interview visiting artists; one slightly incoherent one with Eek a Mouse I seem to recall. Just remembered Dennis Brown on the Friday evening Radio 1 show circa ’78, where they would review up- coming releases , with I think Siouxsie on the same panel. Anyway ole Dennis seemed to pretty much like every track; either that or he didn’t give a toss..... I think Scotty “The Scotsman” took over from Mike Shaft at Piccadilly at a later date......
