In 1897, Thomas Walker, a local leather works owner, was influenced by the evangelical Manchester City Mission, which led to the proposal of a mission hall in Bolton, the first town in the country to have a central hall. Built by Bradshaw and Gass from 1898, who would later build Le Mans Crescent in Bolton, Victoria Hall Methodist Mission of Knowsley Street, Bolton, would open in 1900. Accommodating 2000 people, the Hall was regarded as the largest in Methodism at the time. As well as a place of worship, Victoria Hall has been used for many things throughout the years, these including concerts, silent films, lectures, meetings, other musical events, school and charity presentations, amongst others. During both World Wars, the hall played a pivotal part in looking after the people of Bolton.
