Scope and content: The Hallé Concerts Society was run by an Executive Committee until 1989. In 1972 this body became called the General Committee when a smaller Executive Committee was established, which was more concerned with the day to day administration of the concerts. In 1989 it was decided to rename the General Committee as a Board.

Scope and content: The records in this section are organised by function. The Concerts Department was responsible for all aspects of concert planning and orchestra management. In later years it also developed an educational role. The generation and maintenance of the Orchestra Schedules [HS/3/1/1] was a primary function. The bulk of the remaining records are administrative files, including correspondence. These files have been arranged by broad subject [HS/3/2] including Special Concerts, Town Files, Orchestra Management. For the bulk of the period covered by these files there was one person in charge of the department - Head of Concerts, [later General Manager and Chief Executive, with a Deputy in each case]. The same functions are now carried out by the Concerts Director and the Head of Artistic Planning. There are therefore files here that originated with what would now be regarded as the Chief Executive's Department.

Scope and content: The survival of the financial records of the Hallé Concerts Society is a little patchy. There is a run of account books at the Henry Watson Music Library. The annual printed statements of account have been listed with the Board records at HS/1. Other material has been arranged in series and sub-series as appropriate. Some of the records remain closed, although permission may be sought from the archivist for research purposes.
