Alan Rawsthorne Papers - 9 series; approx. 242 files
1861-1998
MS works of Alan Rawsthorne including manuscripts of most of his published works. In addition there are manuscripts of many unpublished pieces, most from early in the composer's career. Rawsthorne composed symphonies, concerti, chamber music, film music, and music for solo instrument and voice. There is a set of recordings on cassette of most of the composer's output, together with the composer's own collection of discs and tapes, many of which are private, historic performances of first performances. Among other items are to be found correspondence chiefly with family members, writings by the composer including items of juvenilia, and press cuttings collected over the whole of his career. Medals and awards, transcripts and notes of broadcasts and lectures, some photographs, and programmes are also included.

Leaflet containing biography and list of works. RCM after part training to be a dentist and architect, studied abroad including under Egon Petri, taught at Dartington Hall 1932-34. Served in the Army in WW2. Awarded CBE in 1961, and made honorary Doctor of Music of Liverpool, Essex and Belfast Universities. Second wife was the painter, Isabel Rawsthorne who was sculpted by Giocometti and Epstein and had portraits painted by Derain, Picasso and Francis Bacon. She designed stage sets for ballets. Copies of "The Creel", the annual journal published by The Alan Rawsthorne Society from Spring 1990-Winter 2005-06 (not complete set). Also copies of the newsletter June 1996-Jun 2005 (again, not complete). The Society was set up to disseminate information about the composer and encourage recordings. Many many articles and reviews. Review "Rawsthorne at 60". Programme of Memorial Concert 24/11/71 at the Wigmore Hall presented by MacNaghten Concerts featured John Ogdon on piano.
