Manchester Music Mooch

Manchester Music Mooch is a free, Augmented Reality (AR) based app for smart phones, created by Salford-based Dig Media in partnership with the Manchester Digital Music Archive. The app was funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund and launched in the summer of 2025.

Focusing on grassroots music culture, the app highlights some of the venues, scenes and people that have helped make Manchester one of the world’s most celebrated music capitals.

The app guides users on a trail through Manchester City Centre exploring the city’s rich musical heritage, spanning the city across the Oxford Road Corridor, The Village, the Northern Quarter, the Knott Mill area and Deansgate. The trail shares stories that bring context to the places and people behind Manchester’s music history and includes new-tech, gamified AR experiences, bringing creativity and fun to the forefront. You can even make your own tune!

This online exhibition, curated by the team behind Manchester Music Mooch features archival items such as posters, images and personal stories uploaded by users, that connect to locations along the Manchester Music Mooch trail.

To download the app, scan the QR code in the header picture, or visit: www.manchestermusicmooch.com where you can read more about the app and Mooch locations.
