The Golland Papers chiefly comprise the original compositions (in MS) of John Golland, and his arrangements of the works of other composers. There are also papers relating to his teaching work at Salford Polytechnic, his work as editorial assistant on the Bandkraft series, and in his library of works, of his conducting of a number of bands and other ensembles.

Title: Original compositions
Level: Series
Extent: 97 files
Creator:
Dates: 1962-c.1990
Scope and content: Arranged in order of opus number. Golland occasionally assigned two works the same op. number (numbered 1 and 1a), and JG/O/90 has no op. number assigned. The following op. numbers have no corresponding original file in the series: 11, 12, 14, 15, 30, 85, 86, 87 and 88. However JG/O/91 includes copyist's transparencies of opera 12, 14 and 15. The works not represented in this series are therefore 11, 30, and 85-88 inclusive. These have been listed by John Turner (using Golland's own records) as 11 - Two Christmas Songs 30 - Trio for trombones "for Chris Thorpe" 85 - Derbroence: Concert overture for brass band 86 - Dies Natalis for brass band (also arranged for wind band) 87 - Concerto for flugelhorn and brass band "for Stan Lippeatt" (also arranged for flugelhorn and wind band) 88 - Brass quartet no. 4 Phantasie. John Turner's research notes of first performances of many of the works are held at RNCM Archives.
